The NVR's main TV output goes black or shows scrambled video, but the system itself is running. This is usually a display, decoder, or stream issue — not a fault with the cameras.

1. Check the monitor cable

Most NVRs output to a TV/monitor via HDMI or VGA:

  • Confirm the monitor is on and set to the right input
  • Try a different HDMI cable
  • Try plugging the monitor into a different port on the NVR

Sometimes simply unplugging and replugging fixes it.

2. Output resolution mismatch

NVR is outputting 4K but the monitor only supports 1080p (or vice versa). Black screen results:

  • Try the NVR's VGA output if HDMI is dark
  • Through the menu (you may need to navigate blind based on memory), reduce output resolution
  • Or hold down a specific button at boot (varies by vendor) to reset to default 1080p output

3. Decoder load

NVRs decode each live stream in real time to display them. With many high-res cameras, the decoder can saturate:

  • Switch from main stream (4K) to substream (1080p or lower) for live view
  • Reduce the number of channels visible at once (quad view vs. 16-up)
  • Some NVRs have a "spotlight" mode showing one camera at full quality

If decoder load is the issue, reducing display channels usually clears it.

4. Live mode vs. playback

Verify you're in live mode and not stuck in a playback / search interface:

  • The button to return to live view varies by vendor
  • Usually a "Live" button or a home icon

5. Specific channels black

If most channels show but specific ones don't:

  • That channel may be assigned to a camera that's actually offline
  • The camera may have changed stream URL after a firmware update
  • Verify by checking each camera in the camera management section

6. Test on a different output

Many NVRs have two outputs (main + auxiliary). If main is dark, try aux. If aux works, the main output (or its cable, or the monitor) is the issue.

7. NVR overheating

NVRs throttle or behave erratically when hot. Check:

  • Is the fan running?
  • Vents clear?
  • Room temperature normal?

If the NVR is in a hot closet without ventilation, the heat is the issue.

8. Reset video output

Many NVRs let you reset video settings:

  • Hold a specific button at boot (Sx series Hikvision: F1 + Power; varies by vendor)
  • Or use the network interface from a laptop to access without needing the TV output

9. Network display vs. local

Even with a broken local display, you can usually view cameras from:

  • Web interface from a laptop on the same network
  • Vendor mobile app

If web view works fine but local display is broken, definitely a display/output issue — not a camera or network issue.

10. NVR firmware

A bad firmware update can leave the NVR in a strange display state:

  • Check firmware version
  • If recently updated and now displays badly, rollback via the recovery mode

When to ticket

Raise a ticket if:

  • Multiple outputs all dark
  • Decoder load can't be reduced enough to display anything
  • Resetting video output doesn't help
  • Firmware rollback needed

Include the NVR model, the firmware version, what you've already tried, and whether the network view works.
